Bert and Caryl 40th Anniversary

  2011

How can it be our 50th class reunion?  I hardly feel 50, let alone by out of high school for 50 years!  That said, it is nice to reconnect with long time friends.

I have enjoyed the last three years in retirement from teaching.  They have been busy - following the cliche - and renewing.  You can take the teacher out of the classroom, but she returns to tutor GED students, to read with grandchildren, and to do a little research on her own.  It is easy when one gets to do exactly what she wants each day.

Bert and I just celebrated our 45th anniversary - we keep winning those longest married couple dances at weddings!  We travel, enjoy family get togethers, refresh in Florida, and maintain good health.

Our children Bret and Becky are now reaching the "over the hill" mark and that can't be possible either.  We are blessed to have 4 grandchildren and two in law children.  Can't get much better than that.

One of the blessings of our advanced age is an appreciation for what we know and can continue to learn.  We appreciate friends and opportunities.  Days may be numbered, but each is special.  Looking forward to spending one of those days with you.

I am certainly looking forward to our 46th (can that be?!?) reunion. I have always been very proud to be a WLHS grad as the school system has consistently ranked first in the state on ISTEP scores. Gives me bragging rights with my husband Bert, a North Central HS grad from Indianapolis.

I am wrapping up my 20th year teaching social studies to 8th graders in a Washington Township in Indianapolis middle school. I have been head of the department for almost that long and witnessed many changes in education in that time. Next year will be the last of a very satisfying and meaningful career.

What will I "do" then? Who knows. I have been "doing" for nearly 30 years of teaching. I have a wonderful husband, 2 children, 3 grandchildren, friends and family in many places, as well as indoor and out pursuits. Ginny Johnson Eckhoff and I have met frequently in Naples FL where we both have getaways, and we seem to be able to pick up the conversation right where we left off in 1965.

Life has been full of blessings, and I'm appreciative. When I read about high school now, I am glad I went then. I hope we were kinder to each other and that it is as pleasant a memory for each of you as it is for me.
